In Act 3, it's shown that, though she shows up for meals and goes through the motions, she doesn't actually consume anything. She's just there for form's sake. It really bugs Roger early in the series - that scene is one of the first times he insensitively chides her for what he sees as her mindlessly mimicking human behavior.
