I remember one of those custom mechs myself. A friend of mine proceeded to build O.S.C.ar (One Shot Charlie). He got a light frame, mounted a heavy engine, and one giant gun--mounted backwards. Its turn radius exceeded the map size! Its tactic was simple. It ran up to you faster than you could draw a
bead on it, and then take off at an angle directly away from you. From a dead
run, it could shoot the main gun as it passed.
