Following this subthread finally helped me put a finger on what bugged me about it. Its not the plethora of conduit, etc, that bugged me about it all, its that it felt not futuristic enough. Might have helped to have some strange glowy machines that looked futuristic along with all that white painted piping and conduitage.

though there is a reason that stuff's all white: helps you spot if anythings leaking, cause the paint/insulation/whatever will be discolored!
