So, CW's the Arrow.

Look, I know it's CW but it's pretty good. Great action scenes, a compelling male lead, complicated characters, enough dipping into comics lore to be rewarding but not afraid to take anything in a new direction, a tendency to resolve plot lines fast, and lastly Manu fucking Bennett is owning it as Slade Wilson. For you Who and Torchwood fans John Barrowman is awesome in the first season.

The first season is streaming on Netflix, and I think it's worth a watch for anybody.

Frankly, son, I think you're being pretty optimistic filing this under "source material". :)

Also,

>owning it as Slade Wilson

is... I mean what? That's like saying MegaWeapon was the most engaging character in Warrior of the Lost World -

OK, bad example.

But he was! Better actor too than most of the cast and he always showed up, on time, ready to act!

I know! That's why I said it was a bad example. :)

I mean, comic books right... right?

Yeah, in retrospect this shoulda been in Private Emails.

And I'm serious, Bennett is awesome as former Australian Secret Intelligence Service agent Slade Wilson. Dude played Crixus in Spartacus Blood and Sand, and can switch from scary ass killer to smug villian trolling the hero as needed. It's fantastic.

As it happens, like Mr. Chekov with a tricky transporter lock, I can do that!

Yep. And heck, up until last week, the second season had been nothing but better.

But last week had what was possibly the dumbest regression of a character from badass to whiner in the entire show. I am disappoint.

>fucking Bennett is owning it as Slade Wilson

You know, I would ordinarily be skeptical of any media work that was front-and-centering Slade fuckin' Wilson, the single most overrated, missused, and appalling supervillain in the entire DCU.

But I had that same reaction when people told me about his presence in Teen Titans, and that version of Slade was pretty fucking cool and actually used correctly. So I'm prepared to give other non-comics uses of Slade the benefit of the doubt.

So now I'm slightly intrigued. I'm still wary, tho. I invested four years of my life into Smallville before realizing, no, you know what? This show is never going to fulfill its promise. Ever.

Arrow fulfills the promise Smallville made and ignored. It's really really good. (I'm a few episodes behind on Season 2, mind, so I'm not sure about the latest developments.) Also, it does take a few episodes to hit its stride, but once it does? Oh man.

Well, not literally. Shit, that would be a long-running goddamn series. :)

I don't think there are even 35,063 hours of Dragonball. It just feels that way sometimes.

32,436 hours of them are superhero-power-up-sequences.

I actually took a couple minutes to do some back-of-the-envelope math. A standard BBC season of twelve or thirteen total hour-long episodes would take on the order of 2600 years to get to four total years of footage.

Not even Professor Enigma has produced that volume, even if you assume they eventually moved to a more American-standard number of episodes. :)

I'm not going to gild the lily too much as it's a CW show so there's people on it who were chosen because they were young and good looking rather than strict acting chops (Caity Lotz I love you but you stink), but I've found when shows don't feel the need to weigh themselves down with comic baggage they can do interesting takes. I mean, Young Justice made fucking Sports Master a credible threat.
