Follow-up: first-generation Mercury Cougar. Dad may have misremembered (or his friend may have exaggerated) the fender hatch thing. I haven't been able to find any reference to that fix online, only a lot of people bitching about having to undo motor mounts and partially lift the engine, or train a small howler monkey to go in there and change the plugs.
