Hello. After reading a couple threads and being tempted to post to a couple, I decided to actually make myself an account. And so, even though it's not required or anything (not like, "If you don't want to now, cancel and you can later." *cancel* "I lied; keep typing."), I figured I ought to make my first post an introduction.

Anyway, I'm Slarti. I'm a Wedgerat, I'm a Gweep. First arrived at WPI in fall of 1995. Dropped out spring of 1998, but I stayed in Worcester, got a place to live, and eventually a job. Now (well, as of a little more than a year ago), I'm working as one of the Unix systems administrators at WPI. Yup. I'm one of those guys who never left, and never plans to.

I initially got into Eyrie stuff 'cause I'd enjoyed watching Neon Genesis Evangelion (well, up to the last couple episodes where the creator took a sharp left and took the series straight into Fan Abuse Land), and I'd heard mention that Gryph, Zoner, & co. had been writing NXE (with major points for shuffling Shinji off until he could be introduced in a manner that allowed him to grow a freakin' spine). I haven't read much of the other, non-NXE, stuff, though I'll probably try some of it as I have time.

Oh, and since I was initially encouraged by Jer to post in the thread about the crab rangoons at Ping's Garden, I'll mention that as something of a rangoon connoisseur, I've found Ping's rangoons to indeed be exceedingly tasty. Out of the places where crab rangoons are available in Worcester (and keeping in mind that I prefer rangoons with a high cheese:crab ratio), I'd say that Peking Wok's were the best (when they still existed), IMO. Just behind that are Ping's Garden's and Nancy Chang's, roughly neck-and-neck. Sakura Tokyo's aren't quite so good, but they're still in my "very tasty" range. The ones at Dragon Dynasty (cheap takeout Chinese near campus) are somewhat barely passable, and the rangoons at Thai Cha Da and Chum Lee flunk out of my rankings due to being just too crabby and not cheese-y enough.

Anyway, that's me. I probably won't post too much, but if I do, this should at least give you a little idea of who this Slarti guy is (assuming you don't already know me from Wedge or Gweep stuff).

I wanted it to do that, but DCForum doesn't work that way. :)

*sigh* I don't mind 45 minutes of abstract imagery and introspection, but the series needed a proper ending, dammit. I'm still waiting to see the movies when they come out here later on this year (hopefully).

Check out the manga. I got the first volume last night, after reading the first third of it in the store; in the first *two pages*, Sadamoto succeeds in making Shinji a far more personally likable and understandable person than Anno does in about 11 hours of anime. I rather like NGE, but I have issues with it, and while I'm withholding real judgment until I get further into the manga, so far I'm very pleased with it.

As for Eyrie's other stuff... well, I'll just say that finding a link to Warrior's Legacy was what got me into reading Eyrie in general. Fun series.

Ha! It won't help. I watched a fansub of "End of Evangelion" during WPI's Animefest last year. I lost SAN. It was at least as fucked up as episodes 25 and 26, while also doing a slash-and-burn to make it abundantly clear that he does not want to make any further attempts at an ending.

Yeah, actually, I have the first four volumes of the manga (Are any more than that out yet, I wonder? Haven't seen any more). I agree, it is much better about that than the anime.

OK, as for "finding links" and that sort of thing... In some instances in the last few years, freshmen have shown up at WPI, having already some familiarity with the campus and the Wedge and stuff, *because of stuff they've read by Eyrie and/or GweepCo*. UF, the USFP, some of them had already read them (and I've seen at least one of last year's group post here), and -- in some cases -- had decided to come to WPI because of those stories. Pretty neat, but... *weird*.

Halfway through Part 6 in comic format. No graphic novel for Part 5 thus far.

...Yup, I'd say UF is probably the only reason I even _heard_ of WPI. :) And the general attitude portrayed, and somewhat backed up by a visit two days before the Early Admissions deadline prompted me to rush home on a plane, get the requisite recommendations and etc, and apply exclusively to WPI.

And so far (this is my second year), I'm likin' it alot.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-09-01 AT 04:12 PM (EDT)

In case none of you have a mental image of this particular character, he is perhaps the most memorable one (physically) of the rats: always wears an unbuttoned black trench and a hat and, generally, a shirt with a collar (yay!)... and always, always a Dr. Who scarf. He also does a magnificent Centauri accent.

PS: Made it back to college. The wedge is still there, albeit missing most of its furniture. Used it to cure insomnia not three days ago.

PPS: It's been fun here at WPI. Game's a hit. Bathroom leaks.

--->edited to add the hat.

Hi Slarti and welcome to the boards.

Quick question.. does Slartibartifast(sp) ring a bell?

Yes, that is indeed where I came up with the "Slarti" moniker.

Who still hasn't gotten the hang of Thursdays. (This is apropos of nothing other than a gratuitous HHG reference, since it's Monday right now, which is often at least as bad.)
