History
Len Moreau is a third-generation super-hero. The first Scarlet Sentinel was his grandfather, Benjamin, who discovered the magic ring and lantern in a cave during his Army training in the early 1950s. Unfortunately, Ben Moreau's career as the Scarlet Sentinel was cut short by the Eisenhower administration's anti-vigilante policies before it could really get going, and after only a few adventures, he, like most of the era's mystery men, retired.

The second Scarlet Sentinel was Ben's son Paul, who tried out the ring during the resurgence of superhero activity in the early 1970s. In his third outing, he was nearly killed by one of his father's enemies, the psychotic killer Gallowglass. With thoughts of his young family and his prospects for the future in mind, he gave up heroing.

Paul's son Len was left to discover his family's ill-starred but heroic heritage as a teenager in the late 1980s: he found the lantern and ring in a box in his grandfather's garage and, upon asking, was told the whole story. With his grandfather's blessing, Len took the lantern and ring back home with him and started operating as the family's third Scarlet Sentinel.

The third Scarlet Sentinel's career proved much longer and more successful than either of his predecessors'. By his mid-twenties, he was a well-established and well-respected super-hero. Younger and more approachable than most of the other heroes of his generation, he became friendly with several of the younger hero groups that popped up in the mid-to-late 1990s, and eventually ended up taking on a partner - the teenage archer known as Arrowette, who changed her name to Arsenal shortly after she and the Scarlet Sentinel made their partnership official.

About a year after they teamed up, the Scarlet Sentinel and Arsenal were caught in a massive temporal displacement during the "Neo Hour" incident and found themselves flung into the twenty-fifth century. Undaunted, they settled in New Avalon and continue to battle crime and injustice today.

Powers & Weapons
The Scarlet Sentinel's powers all stem from his magic ring, which generates a form of psychokinetic energy. Using this energy, the Sentinel can fly, project a force-field to protect himself and others from harm, fire powerful bolts of destructive energy, manipulate objects telekinetically, protect himself and others from the pressures of the deep or the vacuum of space, and create interstellar jumpgates through hyperspace.

The Scarlet Sentinel's power ring is ineffective against objects made of glass. It must be periodically recharged by touching it against a larger gem which is disguised as the glass globe in a Handlan & Buck railway lantern. The duration a charge lasts is determined by the intensity of use. An average charge will last about a week.

When charging his ring, the Scarlet Sentinel recites the following oath:

I challenge all things dark and fell,
I'm Evil's bane and Crime's death-knell.
I fight for Truth and Right as well;
I am the Scarlet Sentinel!

Moreau keeps reasonably fit and has had some training in hand-to-hand combat, mostly from Arsenal. He is an experienced and clever fighter, and can look after himself without his ring better than many opponents expect.
