I just assumed that when he was reaching for that exile feeling he was remembering being completely alone with nobody else around him to possibly get hurt, and either left Wolfgang behind to "protect" him, or possibly even just plain forgot about taking him. In any case, while it did seem a little strange, it wasn't too bad. And by leaving Wolfgang with the people he trusted to care for him, Gryphon ensured that Wolfgang would be around for when he came back.

I don't consider it an error so much as an odd, improbable choice. But not impossible, as it were...
