I've been meaning to post a note about this for a while: Of late I've been part of a collective working on a writing project called My Apartment Manager Is Not an Isekai Character, in which a multiversal disaster results in hundreds of "fictional" characters showing up as refugees in an otherwise "normal" Earth. In one of the more recent stories released, Everyone's a Critic, we have a series of vignettes showing the reactions of some of the characters to either canonical or fan works featuring them. One of those vignettes is of Utena's reaction to the Symphony.

"Suddenly I want to go to Maine and meet this Gryphon." "And call him 'Dad'?" Anthy asked as she settled herself back into her seat. "You'll give the poor man a heart attack." "Mm, I might, at that," Utena mused

I dunno about a heart attack, but it would be pretty surreal. :)

I suppose this is a bad time to mention that 20 years ago, Offsides and I were planning on creating an Art of Noise concert CD for you, and we'd actually asked Rachael Lillis if she'd be willing to voice Utena's message to you on it... <grin>

How else would I know the correct model of starship to request from Washuu-chan?" Utena stared at her blankly for a moment. "You're kidding, right?" Anthy simply hummed to herself and turned a page. "Anthy, tell me you're kidding." Anthy just smiled innocently and kept reading.

I should note that whether or not Anthy was kidding has not yet been officially determined.

My own tip of the hat in this same setting is titled So You Just Arrived from a Parallel Universe, which was an experiment in actually trying to write a Bacon Book. I can't claim it's as good as the ones Derek would write, but at least it's got that "Appendix A" about one's enemies. The PDF is sort of a universe bible, but written from an in-universe perspective.

It turned out a bit more dry than most of my work, but we got to have a lot of fun with painting the medium. Tomo Takino scribbled notes in the margins on the way to the printers, and then everyone else started adding marginalia of their own. The printer is the girl from Comic Party, so obviously the people making the cover heard "Bacon Book" and assumed that Bacon was the name of their doujinshi circle, and yeah, the covers are not 100% representative of the contents of the book -- as is traditional.

It was the only fanfic I've written where I had to care so much about fonts and layout, that's for sure.

Brent, the link markup syntax here requires you strip the "http(s)" off the URL, which you didn't. Normally I'd expect it to go nowhere, but in this case the link in your message goes to someplace that throws up what looks like a suspicious bogus error message.

Ugh, not this one again. I am a professional Perl programmer; are you accepting patches for this forum software which you are probably the only one still using?

I wouldn't fix the XSS bugs though, because I think they're funny. :D

As I understand it Gryphon isn't touching the forum software for fear that it'll break even worse.

(There was someone unrelated trying to update the software 2 years ago, don't know what happened to them)

The longer this goes on, the farther away it gets from the Symphony, but I just wanted to note that our latest post in the series has another shout-out to UF in it. During a teleconference for the managers of the various displacee residences, this comes up:

Bob Schroeck: Why haven't we seen anyone from fanfiction? I very seriously doubt that the multiverse at large gives a crap about copyrights, trademarks and market share, so logically we should have or should soon see someone recognizable from a fic. Heather Raven: Like Doug, maybe? Bob Schroeck: Well, yeah, or the Girls. But just as much, Twister, Legion, Fenris... any of the godlike Harry Potters or world-jumping Ranmas... Terawatt! Or Chris Angel's Paradox. Hell, Gryphon or just about anyone else from Undocumented Features.
