Hmm... could be. The descriptions for Hurry and Spitfire above came from a longer writeup that also expanded includes personality notes, which I'm working on as another expansion to the general notes post (along with the episode guide and whatnot). It's not finished yet, and I decided to just pull the physical descriptions out and post them in the interest of timeliness. Most of the later ones only have the physical descriptions as yet; I've only finished the first drafts of the full capsules for Hurry, Spitfire, and Me 109:

Hurricane
Full name: Hurricane "Hurry" Hawker
Birthdate: November 6, 1935
Class: Senior

Most of the time, Hurricane is the very model of a British prep-school head girl - proper, reserved, level-headed. As the "old lady" of the Britannia fighters, she seeks to set a good example for the underclassmen and uphold the school's ideals, presenting a ladylike and composed exterior at all times. She's no shrinking violet, though, and anyone who has exceeded her patience has learned in short order what a mistake that is. No Merlin-engined aircraft is ever going to be as prim on the inside as Hurry looks on the outside, and in the heat of combat that beautifully modulated singing voice becomes a sort of primal howl, signaling to all who hear it that Hurricane is on the hunt. (Because of this, Me 109 calls her Werwolf.)

Hurry's "fly girl" form is a tall and athletic young woman with long, slightly curly brown hair, brown eyes, and a general air of calm, contained maturity: usually smiling, but never very broadly. (Conversely, on the rare occasions when she gets really angry, it shows much more obviously than in most of the others; her face goes crimson, the pupils of her eyes almost disappear, the sinews of her neck and forearms show, her fingers become claws, and her teeth take on a striking resemblance to a bear trap.) She's the most grown-up-looking of the main characters, and could easily pass for an adult, particularly once the tournament is fully under way and Britannia switches from school to service uniforms.

Spitfire
Full name: Spitfire Type-300 Supermarine
Birthdate: March 5, 1936
Class: Junior

Spitfire (do not attempt to shorten that for nickname purposes; it will not end well for you) is only a few months younger than Hurry, but she ran into some problems in junior high and ended up a year behind her by the time they got to high school. Far from being sensitive about that, though, she considers it a mark of accomplishment that she overcame her problems and became the glamorous top student that she is today. Because of their close resemblance and very similar voices, people often assume the two are sisters. Spitfire (as her name suggests) is somewhat rowdier than Hurry, with less-than-perfect attendance and conduct records and a tendency to be a bit overconfident, but she works hard, is an excellent athlete, and has a naturally winning personality that smooths over most of her rough spots.

In contrast to Hurry, Spitfire is a bit of a tomboy, and prefers her PE clothes to her proper uniform. She keeps her light brown hair short and unfussy and can't see the point of makeup (in part, annoyingly for her classmates, because she doesn't require the embellishment). She usually has a look of slight mischief about her and a glint in her blue eyes, as if she's either up to something or trying to think of something to be up to. She has a surprisingly delicate build for such a dedicated athlete, though, and (somewhat to some people's surprise) is capable of great refinement when the situation calls for it. She can wear a dress, sit with her knees together, and hold a teacup properly, and when called upon to do so, she will. It's just not her default state.

Gymnasium Germania

Me 109
Full name: Dora Bf 109 Messerschmitt
Birthdate: May 29, 1935
Class: Senior

Me 109 was born Bf 109, and it's still officially her name, but she started going by "Me" instead in 1938, when the great German aircraft designer W.E. "Willy" Messerschmitt married into the old Bayerische Flugzeugwerke family and adopted her. (It may explain a few things about the Messerschmitt-BF family dynamic that he's her actual father anyway.) She's older than Hurry and has the most experience of any of the main characters, since she started competing internationally in middle school. On the downside, that also means she has the most old injuries to contend with, and the fatigue of those extra seasons of play is always with her, just below the surface. Out of battle, she's very quiet and reserved, preferring to keep to herself. In the entire course of the series, only three characters ever call her by her virtually-unknown first name, "Dora" - her father, her sister 110, and (once) Hurricane.

Everyone expects Me 109 to be blonde, but her hair is actually dark brown (she's Bavarian, so that's not unusual). She does have blue eyes, though they are a very dark blue. She keeps her hair cut short, never wears makeup, and even her clothes that aren't her uniform look like uniforms. She's smaller than most people expect on first meeting, but holds herself very erect, though close inspection will reveal that she walks with a slight limp thanks to an injury she suffered when she was playing in Spain. She also has the only visible battle scars of any of the main cast: one on her left cheek (which resembles, but isn't, a Heidelberg dueling scar) and a number on her back and legs (revealed only rarely, as for example in the episode where the Germania girls all go to Prora for some R&R).

What informed my designs for the two English stars was mainly their relative ages and times in service, as you see above. Spitfire had some teething troubles and wasn't a great performer in her younger days (though many claimed later that they had seen her potential at the time).

That said, I can see where you're coming from, in that the Hurricane is a somewhat less visually elegant aircraft (particularly compared to the "mature" form of the Spitfire). I suppose it's possible that by the time we meet her on screen, Spitfire has left her misspent youth behind to the extent of becoming the model-student type, and that Hurry's always been a little rougher around the edges than my first draft made her out to be. (She is from Brooklands, after all, the spiritual home of the supercharged Bentley. :)

>I like P-51's description, though I'd add that she's embarrassed by
>her past, as she was quite the tomboy in her youth and even went by
>the nickname "Apache" for awhile before puberty hit.

Actually, that's a common mistake - Apache is her twin sister, A-36 (who looks even more like P-40, and they both serve in China-Burma-India together). A-36 decided to go out for the ground attack team after junior high instead of becoming a fighter, but it's amazing how many people outside the school still think they're the same aircraft. 51 just laughs it off - happens all the time - but she is a bit sensitive about people seeing photos of them together back when their parents still dressed them alike. (And that hairdo, what were we thinking? But 36 never changed it... )

>While she's brash, cheerful, and sometimes foul-mouthed,
>there's an obvious wariness to her voice, as if she'll be glad when
>the whole conference is over so she can go home to a much-deserved
>rest.

From context, I'm guessing you mean "weariness" there. And I dunno, I mean, she did go into business for herself after the tournament. I think maybe she was just tired of being in the Army, not necessarily playing the game.

>Much of the description for Hurry could be applied to 47 and then
>some. She is everything that comes to mind when one thinks of the
>classic girl off the farm: Fair-haired, buxom, stout, tanned, and more
>comfortable in jeans and a man's work shirt than she is in a girly
>uniform.

Big shoulders, too. And 38 once joked that she had "man hands", but 47's only response to that was to challenge her to palm a basketball. (She couldn't.)

>If P-51 is the refined beauty of Columbia High and P-47 the classic
>farm girl, then P-38 is the poster girl that guys love. Glossy blond
>hair, ample chested, and long legged, 38 is the kinda girl who loves
>the attention she gets. But like an Hollywood beauty, she's not
>without her flaws, being prone to getting hot under the collar and
>cutting people down without thinking about it.

My mental image of 38 rather resembles Kongō from Arpeggio of Blue Steel, but with a somewhat less preposterous hairstyle (though, in keeping with the original dream fragment, she does have the "twin tails" thing going on, because, well, she would, wouldn't she), and she dresses differently, obviously. Same body type, though. Quite long fingers, very elegant carriage. Does that same "slouch lissomely in chairs with legs crossed at the knee" thing.

>And she literally gets
>hot under the collar, as many are the time that she can be found
>sitting at her desk with her shirt partly unbuttoned and fanning
>herself as she complains about the heat.

INT. DAY Class 4-02's homeroom. It's a sunny summer day. Cicadas can be heard outside the open windows. The ceiling fan turns slowly. The students are slumped at their seats, waiting for the teacher to arrive. P-38, by the window, fans herself with her notebook and plucks ineffectively at the front of her shirt.

P-38
(miserably)
Oh, it's so hot in here.

P-51
We've been over this, 38. It is warm in here, but we all know the real problem is your turbos.

P-47
Seriously, why don't you go back to regular superchargers if they're such a hassle?

P-40
Ha, because then her service ceiling would be about 20 feet -

P-38 gets up, crosses the room, and punches P-40 on top of the head.

P-40
Ow!

P-38 returns to her seat. After a few moments, she starts fanning herself again.

P-38
(miserably)
Oh, it's so hot in here.
