For various plotting and framing reasons, it looks like Mogami's the winner despite receiving only a single vote (and a few honorable mentions in the comments). But don't despair, other-ship-girls fans; the particular story that poll was for is not going to be KanColle's only bite at the apple.--G. I read the title of this thread as "Poi update" at first, which shows who I was rooting for. Though really, that seems to be the draw (and danger) of KanColle- you can find a girl (of each category of ship, most likely) to fit any situation and temperament. Or team, even, like DESRON 6. Nothing* ever goes wrong with the Akatsukis around.Three cheers for Mogami! *by which I mean everything, but in an adorably hilarious fashion. "This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-15 AT 10:40 AM (EDT) Ahh, Hawaiian poi. It's like edible wallpaper paste, only with less flavor. Apparently there's also a Samoa version that's a pudding made from bananas and coconut milk- obviously somebody greatly oversold the taste of taro to them. no, I didn't go to great lengths researching a poi joke, not at all. So earlier this evening, I was reading about the battleship USS Iowa, and I ran across an interesting bit of trivia. Early in her career, Iowa transported FDR and his entourage to Africa en route to the 1943 Tehran conference of the Big Three Allied leaders (FDR, Churchill, and Stalin). On the way there, one of her escorts fired a torpedo at her accidentally, due to a foul-up during a drill. It didn't hit the ship (and if it had, it's doubtful that a single torpedo would have sunk her), but things were... rather tense for a while there, as Iowa's captain seriously considered sinking the escort vessel on the suspicion that there was some kind of crazy-ass assassination plot going on aboard her.Imagine, for a moment, being that guy. Not only did you just fuck up and fire a live torpedo at the president, the battleship he's on is now toying with the idea of sinking your destroyer. That is a banner bad day at the office. Accompanying image: Nagato, arms folded, glaring daggers at Yūdachi, who looks mortified and sheepish, while all the other destroyers edge fearfully away from her. "Sorry! My bad-poi!" --G. -><- Benjamin D. The USS William D Porter was just unlucky like that. The poor ship's fate was unavoidable - somehow being sunk by a kamikaze that didn't even _hit_ her.*"I dodged that-poi!" Somehow I can only envisage an appropriately shocked Ship-Girl pointing at the result in protest and then slinking away under a cloud of moe-depression when it's judged that yes, she's been destroyed no matter how implausible it might be. * the plane hit the water and blew up underwater, right beneath the Porter

That's a very meta image. I see it less as moé-depression and more as pouty pique. "I'm not even going to say my heart-rending death line this time. This is bullshit-poi." --G. -><- Benjamin D. Oh man, the USS William D Porter. That ship was cursed. There's no other way to describe it. That torpedo came after the same ship had nearly taken out the Iowa with a depth charge, less then a day after they forgot to retract their anchor while leaving port and accidentally carved chunks out of a sister ship. And their attempt to warn the Iowa about that torpedo, thanks to orders for radio silence except under extreme conditions (And apparently, 'I fired a torpedo at the President' wasn't considered extreme enough for them), was by light signals. Which they proceeded to screw up. Several times, before giving in and getting on the radio. I don't think Iowa's captain thought it was an assassination plot. I think he just thought Porter and her crew were too dangerous to everyone else to be left alive. Then the ship made it to port, the entire crew were arrested, and things did not improve for them... Although I do love the fact that Roosevelt's response to this was to ask that his wheelchair be taken over to the railing, because damn, he wanted to see the torpedo coming! Matrix Dragon, J. The same guy responsible for Strike Witches Quest has been running a Kantai Collection Quest as well, and it's ... interesting. And, yes, the first two US destroyers to turn up are Samuel B Roberts and William D Porter. 'Sammy' -really- doesn't like to talk about Samar, she feels she hasn't earned the respect and hero worship that people give her over it. As for the poor kanmusu the audience has nicknamed "Wee Willy Worthless", well, poor Billy's a nervous wreck, too afraid of repeating her past mistakes to be able to so much as shoot accurately. Unless you throw her into a confused melee in an anti-air role....
