Alright, what's the catch? There's gotta be a catch somewhere.

Probably possible arguments over the music. This just gets the main headache to sit the fuck down.

(It's not like Harmony Gold DOES anything with Robotech anyway...)

Harmony Gold's been jealously guarding those rights for decades, which has caused no small amount of grief and bad blood. I figure the more likely explanation for their sudden generosity is some money changed hands under the table, perhaps the funding needed to finally make that live-action Robotech movie happen.

Close, it was, from what I understand, Big West et al not putting up a fuss about Harmony Gold trying to get their Robotech movie anywhere outside of the US where they have rights. If they made that movie, it would have only been possible to get it shown without extensive legal battles in the United States and Canada, which would have set a HARD upper limit on their possible potential audience. It still will, of course, because nobody knows or cares what the hell Robotech is anywhere but North America, but they can at least *try* now, without even the attempt being a massive money sink for lawyers.

At least a quarter of the recent Robotech fan content I've encountered are in Spanish. On YouTube I've most performances of Robotech music were from South American venues, including school bands performing the theme. I think there must be a non-negligible South American fanbase for Robotech.

Hate to engage in thread necromancy, but it seems we're getting a bit closer to an actual release as well as a list of shows coming over:

"Bigwest, the license holder for Macross, announced that the anime will be getting a home video Blu-ray release in the U.S., Canada, and Europe during its panel at Anime Expo. According to Siliconera, Macross II: Lovers Again, Macross Plus, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta are expected to get the re-release treatment. Localization comes thanks to Bigwest’s partnership with Anime Limited, an independent distributor of anime based in the United Kingdom."

Someone down in the comment mentions that Macross 7 is also included and apparently that news didn't get picked up by Kotaku. I'm a bit surprised that Macross Zero didn't make the list, if only because parts of Frontier's plot don't make sense unless you're familiar with the earlier work. Nothing precludes a future release, but I'm sure there's the usual hashing out of things like music rights. No dates are mentioned, but I'd wager sometime either this winter or next spring at the earliest.
