The quick version: EA is starting the ball rolling on make Mass Effect into a movie. The studio behind the project, Legendary Pictures, has shown themselves able to adapt from other media and remain faithful, though they do seem prone to a bit of GRIMDARK.

And given the source material (Reapers) , a little grimdark (mind control) should work just fine.
