Aug 03 20:58:50 * Z-Gryphon considers one of the interesting peculiarities of fandom Aug 03 21:01:17 <Z-Gryphon> Many genre fandoms seem to have, as a common feature, one minor character who attracts a disproportionate amount of interest. Someone who doesn't appear very often, or for very long, and yet seems vaguely omnipresent in fan art and fanfic. Aug 03 21:01:33 * Philip-M nods. Aug 03 21:01:37 <Z-Gryphon> The canonical example is probably Boba Fett, who has a grand total of about 30 seconds of screen time in two of the Star Wars films, says three things, and dies.* Aug 03 21:01:51 <Z-Gryphon> and yet is evvvverybloodywhere in the fandom and secondary licensed products. Aug 03 21:02:14 <Z-Gryphon> In Avatar fandom it seems to be that girl Zuko went out on a date with while he was hiding out in Ba Sing Se, and who, as far as I can recall, was never seen again. Aug 03 21:02:50 <Philip-M> Jin? Yup. Aug 03 21:04:14 <Z-Gryphon> Mind you, I'm not coming down on that. I like her too, I'm just not sure why, given that Fire Nation Soldier No. 4 probably got more screen time. :) Aug 03 21:04:42 <Z-Gryphon> (then again, Fire Nation Soldier No. 4 is kind of a douche. :)--G. * Don't start with that Expanded Universe crap. -><- Benjamin D. I never follow links to trope sites anyway. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. Why would you care about Fire Nation Soldier No. 4 when you can have WANG FIRE HERO OF THE FIRE NATION------ Oh God, it was me. I was the grognard all along.

I'd laugh, except one of my favorite video game series spawned Blasto the Hanar Spectre. Started out as a joke character on the Bioware forums, got promoted to an actual (unseen) character in the second game, shows up again in the third game (again unseen), and finally got his only onscreen performance in the final DLC.

Update on this topic: An unscientific survey of K-On! fan art over the last few days indicates that their equivalent may be Himeko Tachibana, who sits next to Yui in homeroom and... that's about it. :)--G. -><- Benjamin D.
