Well, it's not something that really takes a ton of concealing under most circumstances. Mostly he sort of takes the "Doctor" approach, where he doesn't volunteer much, but figures people who hear him drop some clue to that effect in conversation will assume either they've misheard him or he's trying to be funny. :)

In this case, he's kind of playing on the vagueness of the context. He looks about 30, give or take, at the moment, and so is leaving it to Admiral Sugita to assume that by "a long time" he means 10 or 12 years. (Which indeed he does.)
