HMS Challenger and the Apollo 17 LEM (which, one would assume, was named for it) are secondary sources, as it were; the primary namesakes of the IPO starship by that name are Challenger (OV-099), the STS orbiter lost on January 28, 1986, and USS Challenger (NCC-1870), the Federation Starflet Miranda-class cruiser Gryphon briefly commanded in Split Infinitive. Gryphon's referring to the former in his IPS Challenger commissioning speech, since most people can't be expected to know that he spent part of the Exile working a a space explorer in a parallel universe.
