In 1985, during the rebuilding phase after the Gozer incident, the Ghostbusters concluded that the vault was far too vulnerable - both to supernatural and, as was plainly evident just before the incident, mundane threats - at the firehouse, so it wasn't reconstructed on its original site. Instead, a new and much larger containment facility was built at a secret offsite location, with its own redundant power supplies and passive security systems meant not so much to discourage tampering as to deflect it by directing attention away from the facility itself. The few modern people who know anything about it tend to think of it, rather than the proton pack or the Equations, as Egon Spengler's greatest work.

The firehouse is long gone - it was heavily damaged during the attack on Manhattan during the Contact Wars in late 2001, and the remains demolished shortly thereafter as part of the cleanup - but the vault remains, humming quietly in a subbasement deep beneath the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe on Long Island, attracting no attention.
