I might have mentioned this somewhere else, but evidently not in this thread, and I happened to be reminded of it, so I figured I'd come in and point it out. This story is called The Only Thing because of a verse in a Fall Out Boy song, "Thriller" (no relation to the Michael Jackson track), that always makes me think of Professor Tyler and the Doctor:

The only thing I haven't done yet is die
And it's me and my plus-one at the afterlife
Crowds are won and lost and won again but our hearts beat
For the diehards...
