Even more importantly, the Type 2 Police Call Box (that the TARDIS is specifically based on), there was only ONE door, the door on the right. The left "door" was part of the structure itself, seeing as the phone was basically sitting in a cubbyhole on the interior "desk" surface that the bobbie would use for some minor field paperwork. So if the TARDIS was being completely accurate, there'd also be a chance that the Doctor would slam into a rather more immovable part of the exterior shell while fleeing. :)

It is fairly obvious, though, that the TARDIS chameleon circuit, whenever possible, will modify the exterior shape to accommodate a proper door or set of doors into the interior.
