So, there was something else about this story I liked, but it was always sitting in the back of my brain until I reread it and saw this line.

Yes. The Doctor actually tracking down the end of season disaster once he starts getting some clues. I really wanted to smack the Doctor during that season, especially after the Ood started dropping more hints.
