I'm not denying anyone anything. Other folks? Free to wallow. I'm just saying I don't dig that action and it's generally not served at this counter as a result.

I mean, I can and will do some dark shit. I've put characters through hell (sometimes literally!), and (if current plans come to fruition) will do again. But here's the thing: I very much resist doing that - on some level, I think I probably can't do that - under the assumption that it'll be permanent. There has to be some hope somewhere, or I can't see the point.

Look, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is the real world's nightmare curse. It guarantees that any improvement in anything is a temporary illusion, life is fleeting and a constant struggle while it lasts, and ultimately everything around you - especially your own body and mind - will, not may, will let you down. Faced with that ultimately brutal cosmic truth, why even bother with no-exit angst in fiction? It's a pale imitation at best.
