I don't donate blood anymore -- between difficulties in finding a vein to begin with, and far more failures to get a pint out of me than successes, I stopped trying -- but when I did, Red Cross here in NC gave out sugary drinks (both soda and fruit juices) and water, and a mix of sugary and salty snacks. Given that one has necessarily lost both blood sugar and blood pressure by donating, the idea is to try to restore some of that.
