INTERIOR: An apartment sits empty, somewhere in the galaxy. It's obviously occupied by a man, and that man is obviously a bachelor. Empty Hungry Humanoid packets mingle with empty takeout containers and the occasional beer can. It's not disgustingly messy, just random. Copies of Aviation Week & Space Technology share coffee table space with Maxim.A giant, black, old-fashioned Bakelite telephone rings the giant, bright, old-fashioned ring you would expect. A similarly ancient answering machine sits next to the phone. Behind them both on the small table where they sit rests the glossy helmet of a fighter pilot (the kind that goes with CVR-3 armor). The machine answers the phone on the third ring. VOICE ON MACHINE Hi, this is Scott Bernard, at the tone leave your name and message and I'll get back to you. SFX beeeeep VOICE ON PHONE Hello, Mr. Bernard, this is Jack over at Raytheon. We just received your GPM-150 order for March, and I'm afraid we might not be able to make that quantity in time. Our new plant on Kane's World is running behind schedule. Give me a call, let's see what we can work out. You casting James Gardner as Bernard? I hadn't thought of that. The joke that spawned this was more the other way around (that and placing odd characters in the role of recipiants of the Rockford Files opening credits gag is a long-running injoke in the studio, at least between Gryph and I. This time just happened to be different in that Gryph said, "Dude, micro-story!" right after I made it.) Contextually, I'd like to think this is one of the many items done using the Scott Bernard legend in popular culture during the Golden Age. >t. >wonders how many really cool original characters started as in-jokes. I can think of a couple, one of which exists in UF as sort of a trans-meta joke. Chad's Selkath friend Tramm, seen in one or two minor bits of the Symphony is based off an amusing transient character from the Teen Titans cartoon, Aqualad's little fish-man friend who'd good at fixing things. *That* Tramm is named for Tramm Wigzell, one of the development guys at CN, Partially responsible for Titans and more or less wholly responsible for the current hit over there, Ben10. He's also one of my best friends from film school. ;)

I figure it's one of several gag opening credits sequences that were done for episodes in various seasons of The Bernard Files - kind of like that one Dirty Pair calendar Sunrise made back in the '80s that featured illustrations of Kei and Yuri in various popular movies of the era (Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, and Rambo: First Blood Part II come to mind). --G. -><- Benjamin D.
