I think they were banking on her embodiment of an ancient spirit of light as a hedge against that outcome, but yeah, seriously. The more they reveal about Korra's "childhood" in the canon, the more convinced I am that the only reason she's not a laugh-while-the-world-burns supervillain as a young adult is because she is, pure and simple, the single best person the human genome has ever aligned to produce. Virtually anybody else, including people whose inner nature was only very good, would have gotten out of there at 17, looked at the world, and thought, Right. This shithole owes me, and now it's time to collect. Mama needs a new pair of shoes. (Or, as I like to think of it from my City of Villains days, the Jen Rossum effect.)

But this is, perhaps, a tangent for Source Material.

Shit, at least Laura and Azula got to travel. ... Admittedly, there was a lot of murder involved, so it wasn't a perfect system.
