Kaguya came off a bit better in the first version I ran into. If I remember right, the idea there was that she gave a bunch of suitors the same set of tasks at the same time, and five of them each brought her one of the requested items... but since no one brought all five, that still wasn't enough.

(There's also the interpretation that the whole thing was intended as a polite way of saying "please go away" but it didn't quite work out.)

Kaguya and Mokou's "periodically kill each other" thing is one of the few things in the original canon (of the games I'm familiar with) that I find honestly disturbing, given that I favor a "lighter and softer" interpretation of the franchise. (Both out of preference and because I feel that matches what we're shown in the games themselves better.)
