Like TheOtherSean says, it was Diane Carey who wrote those two "ultimate Mary Sue" novels. She went into recovery, though. :) I've always thought myself there's a distinction between author self-insert and Mary Sue-ism; in the latter, as we all know, the self-insert character is pretty much the deus ex machina and the romantic cynosure of all eyes.
