Twenty-one years before. The Vulcan Heart takes place near the beginning of the first of two five-year Enterprise (A) missions G was part of; near the end of the second he was transferred to command of Invincible. He'd nearly finished his second five-yearer in command of that ship when Manhunt came along. Add some downtime for refits, leaves, etc. in between, and there you are.
