>You know... It makes an odd kind of sense to have the Master Chief as >The Stig. Or shall we call him the Master Stig? *Ducks!* Though no one truly knows who the Stig is, we can be reasonably certain he's not an actual SPARTAN, and he's certainly not John. For one thing, he's quite a lot smaller. You'd never get John into a Caterham Seven, even one of the newer models with the enlarged cockpit. Indeed, the Stig doesn't normally wear Mjolnir-VI CQB armor; that was a stunt(?) for the show's return from hiatus after the BBC left Earth following the Earth Alliance crackdown of 2406. The story, as presented on the 2407 premiere, was that Earthforce had surrounded the Top Gear studio/track complex in Guildford and all seemed lost when the day was saved by a mysterious, invincible figure in white armor. This strange, silent savior rode to the rescue at the controls of a (stolen) Royal Army M831 light transport vehicle and, at one point in the operation, was seen to throw the Reasonably Priced Car at a group of Earthforce troops. It wasn't until they were on their way out and he cut the test track's first corner that anyone realized he was the Stig - a suspicion confirmed aboard the outbound blockade runner that took the team out of the Solar system, when he left the crew lounge and reappeared a few minutes later in his customary white fire suit and Simpson helmet. Some say he's a fugitive cyborg super-soldier who tired of war long ago, and that he only wants to be left in peace to drive fast cars and listen to his books-on-crystal. All we know is, he's called the Stig. --G. -><- Benjamin D. God damn, Gryphon. I was able to read that that post with Jeremey Clarkson's voice in my head the whole way through! You're getting friggin' scary with how you're able to channel that guy. ;)So he rides in to save the day, even chucking a light armored transport at the baddies? If he ain't a SPARTAN, then it makes me wonder what he really is. >You'd never get John into a Caterham Seven, even one of the newer models with the >enlarged cockpit. And on that note, what would John's vehicle of choice be? Certainly not just a civilianized Warthog. (I know he's got one, but just -how- civilianized it is would probably be a point of debate ;) Black Aeronaut Technologies Creative aerospace solutions for the discerning spacer "Here at the Advanced R&D Center it's not a normal fiscal year until we have to save the universe." |

>So he rides in to save the day, even chucking a light armored >transport at the baddies?Well, no, he threw the Reasonably Priced Car at them. Certainly not any kind of armored anything; rather the 25th-century equivalent of a Lacetti or the like. >>You'd never get John into a Caterham Seven > >And on that note, what would John's vehicle of choice be? I'm not sure. Great big lad like that, he'd have a fairly narrow range of options. Given that he's played by Daniel Craig in UF, the obvious temptation is to put him in an Aston Martin of some kind or another, though there is a part of me that's deeply amused by picturing a Lamborghini Reventón in SPARTAN green with gold windows. I rather doubt he's really the sports car type, though, amusing image or not. --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-08 AT 07:46 PM (EDT) I'd like to think he'd drive the van...thing from Mystery Men It just strikes me as something that a person who basically lives in Power Armor would drive And when asked about it he'd shrug and respond that its "practical"That or a Scorpian

>I rather doubt he's really the sports car type, though, amusing image >or not. You know, I think he's a truck man. I'm suddenly envisioning him driving around New Avalon in an ancient, exquisitely restored Chevy truck. It just fits, you know? The roomy cab, the simple and resilient design, and the hauling capacity as well... It just makes sense to me. That and it'd be kinda cool to see John jkust going about his business, God only knows what in the bed, arm draped casually over the door as he drives back to his place. >...hold up - the Master Chief is played by Daniel Craig???? > >wierd, >t. >who was thinking of someone much more....um....built.... It was something of a moral imperative after Casino Royale came out. FWIW, at least as I see it, a lot of John's bulk comes from the armor. He's bigger than most, sure, but he's not out of proportion.

I'd say it's Maxwell Key, a.k.a. Maximillian Largo mk.2. Explains both hidden face and massive strength. :) Edit: Oh, and speaking of that...is that name a reference to playwright Maxwell Anderson or just a coincidence?

>Maxwell is obviously a modification of Maximillian. > >As for the last name, I think it's a reference to Key Largo. > >Peter Eng >-- That is one possibility, and perhaps the more likely. On the other hand, Maxwell Anderson wrote a play called, you guessed it, Key Largo, later remade into a film, starring, among others, Bogart & Bacall.

I knew about the movie, but I didn't know that he wrote the play. If that was deliberate on Gryphon's part, it's a deeply tangled connection from an author who, in my limited experience, seems to be rather direct in his references. Gryphon is sometimes subtle, but he generally doesn't do things in such a roundabout fashion.
