I was about 9 years old, and my Aunt Joan gave me a box set of the first 6 Burroughs Mars books.

Much of what I've come to think about fiction, sci-fi, heroics, and a host of other things owes its existence to a wide-eyed kid wondering what the hell he was going to do with books written as long ago as 1912?

....Lensman came not long afterwards ;)
