The (wildly overproduced, infused-with-much-artificial-tension) TV Tomodachi docudrama about the event was entitled wake: alarm, and featured a great deal of exaggeration with regards to how close the Crypton engineers came to finding out what was going on and putting a stop to it. It's not even clear whether they really would have, if they had known, though there was an element of danger that they might've mistaken what was happening for a catastrophic malfunction and shut everything off. That's different from the sense of willful menace the TV movie writers injected into the team, though, and caused at least one of the engineers portrayed to sue the network for defamation of character.
