With the information I have as a reader, I'm wondering if the Meta Eridani system contains a natural dimensional instability with a period of decades. It's just that usually, the cross-rip which forms doesn't catch anything more notable than a mass of dark matter, or the occasional asteroid.

Then, there's 2293 and 2335...
