"Fairly consistent" is something of a misnomer. It's been more on-again, off-again, and a random sampling of Doctor Strange comics might lead one to believe that he's not had so much as a kiss since he first hit the comics pages.

To get this romance to come back together again, Strange had to be murdered, triggering a contingency spell that summoned himself from earlier on his personal timeline in order to solve the murder. (This was in the limited series before the one that mdg1 referenced.)

In the course of this, Previous Strange observed that Clea was such a fine sort that his later self must have been a complete ass to have screwed up their relationship so thoroughly. I can't recall offhand whether or not Previous Strange eventually called out Current Strange on this poor life choice.

In any case, they managed to revive Current Strange, deal with the people who murdered him, arrange for Clea to take over as Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, and have Current Strange apologize to Clea for screwing things up between them before Death reclaimed his soul.

So, the scene mdg1 posted? That's the result of a series that has Clea defending the world from a mysterious group of necromancers while trying to figure out why the Marvel Universe Revolving Door To The Afterlife™ isn't working for Stephen.

All true, but honestly the only reason they were broken up in the comics is that one writer wanted to write Strange as a bit of a gigolo in his Defenders run.

Of all his love interests, Clea is the one he keeps going back to.

I'm going to stop hijacking Gryph's thread now. :)

I started over after a couple-three hours, as often happens with these sorts of games...

... but that means now I gotta do the Spider-Man mission again. Whyyyyyyy

(OK, it's not that hard, it's just... kind of annoying. "Some Super Villains must be defeated more than once in a mission." Why? How is that fun? And can I please turn off just Eddie's dialogue?)

I wish to five five (5) bonus points to the writer who saw to it that, in the proper tradition, the first mention of Deadpool's name in the cutscene dialogue introducing his recruitment mission is delivered with an interrobang.

I guess I haven't run into that. I didn't even realize there was a limit. I've got dozens of 'saves' cluttering up my list (most of them autosaves); I guess you're talking about, like, save sets maybe? One per character?

I ran into limited save slots too, but at least for me on PC it's a lot. Dozens. I've had to go back and delete old saves on occasion, though.

Nope, look:

It doesn't seem to do "career" save grouping, like the Mass Effect games, which is too bad.

I haven't counted how many saves are in there, but given that I was maybe 15 hours in when I ran out of slots and I'm not exactly a pathological manual saver, whatever the cap is seems pretty restrictive to me...

I have to say, for all the occasionally egregious... Firaxian-ness... this game possesses, it does a good job of conveying the superhero power fantasy. The "fuck yeah!" moments you can set up with a little care and some RNG are very, very satisfying when they happen.

As a case in point, I present a thing that just happened which I don't even know how I arranged it, but it was awesome:

Routine rooftop mission vs. HYDRA goon squad, I forget the specific objective. I think it might just have been to kill defeat them all. The squad: Hunter, Ghost Rider, and Iron Man.

(As an aside, I know other people playing here aren't really enamored of his mechanics, but I really dig Robbie's shtick. The aesthetic of his animations is amazing, especially Hell Ride, and I will never get tired of pitching HYDRA officers into his hellpits. But I digress.)

So, the team's had a little trouble with the heavier HYDRA units on this mission, such that I kind of had to let the small fry slide while I dealt with them. By and by, this led to a situation where Tony was surrounded by no fewer than seven scrub-tier HYDRA dudes (the ones with rifles and tasers) and nobody had any cards. The only card available was one of those tactical drop cards that one of the officers had had, and I wasn't completely clear on what it did, because I'm still learning this weird card-game lingo the mechanics are written in. Something like "Give a hero Counter. Taunts all enemy units." I played it mainly because I had one play left and it was the only card available, then hit End Turn and waited to see if Tony was gonna live.

One by one, every single HYDRA goon left on the map attacked him--to no discernible effect--and one by one, he repulsored them in the face (and in a couple of cases, clean off the roof) in return. He systematically wiped out everything the bad guys had left, with a sarcastic quip for each.

"You guys oughta talk to your union rep, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be fighting on our level yet."

"How good is HYDRA's medical plan anyway?"

"I hear Lilith is kinda hot, any of you nerds make a move yet?"

"I'm saving my energy until we need it."

It was a good round to be Iron Man, is what I'm saying.

It has some irritating habits (I am really not impressed that Firaxis recycled one of my least favorite things from XCOM 2, "oops! it's a Ruler/Chosen in your routine mission!"), but it's a great game when everything clicks.

>of want to slow down a little and poke around more but they keep
>urging me to move on to the next mission. :)

I get what you mean about this now. The gameplay loop is really well-structured for moreishness. "Well, I'll just do another mission. Well, I'll stick around for the nighttime social stuff after. Well, I might as well get tomorrow morning's daily chores done while I'm here. Well, I guess I can do another mission."

By "grindy" I mostly meant that the missions seemed to take longer than they needed too when I was watching other people play, although in direct practice that usually doesn't seem to be the case. I will say that the resource awards do seem to be quite small, though. Running out of money to build stuff that's been researched has been a constant annoyance so far (doubly so because I didn't realize at first that the daily sparring chore was costing $20 a pop, speaking of which, WHY does the daily sparring chore cost $20 a pop, I mean wtf is that other than a pointless hindrance).

So in that sense, I still kind of stand by my assessment. :) You're right that it's not the same kind of dreary grind as, say, having to mooch around for hours leveling JRPG characters until they can handle the next mandatory encounter to advance the game, though. It's subtler and less frustrating than that.

Speaking of, I'm a couple of friendship levels in now with Strange, and I'm really warming to the way he's portrayed. He comes across as his stereotypical priggish know-it-all self at first, but the farther you get into it, the more you see that it's at least in part a front for a colossal faultline of self-doubt that just about busted him in half when he got his own overconfidence shoved up his ass in the post-tutorial cutscene. Watching him admit that to Hunter, and himself, is really satisfying. I actually like the sonofabitch at this point. :)

Also, he's got good comic timing, even if he doesn't realize it. There's a bit where he and Nico witness a couple of the other characters nearly come to blows, and their dialogue is a thing of great beauty, both in composition and delivery.

NICO
I'm staying way back here and hope they don't notice us.

STRANGE
Mm-hmm! Yep.

The writers seem to have gone to great lengths to humanize the characters and show that superheroes are people, which is not something Marvel has always had an amazing track record doing (for all that it was their signature in the '60s), and that's really nice to see.

Evidence that my computer isn't really up to this game. Not that I should expect much from a machine that is almost exactly the same as it was when I pulled the box off the shelf at the store.

Okay, Facebook is rather aggressively blocked on almost every device I routinely use, so I'm just now getting around to seeing what this was a picture of, and Yikes.

I... don't think that's a memory problem? I mean, I'm only running 16GB myself, and a GTX 1060. Which is barely above the supposed minimum specs.

If I had to guess, I'd pin that on either graphics card inadequateness or graphics driver lunacy. Speaking of the latter! My crash rate has dropped to effectively zero now that I've updated to the LATEST-latest drivers rather than the couple-month-old drivers I was using. Which, considering Midnight Suns dropped in December (and has had massive patches since), I guess I can see it.

I'll look into that, but I'm betting on graphics card inadequacy. Oddly, I haven't seen anything since the "Sparring Complete" image, which makes me wonder if my computer quietly upgraded the drivers without my telling it to.

I love how they build up Crossbones as this terrifying über-threat, and then we kicked his face in so hard he never actually got to do anything. I especially appreciate the way in which we did that, which involved whittling him down with cards and then using a big stack of bonus Moves that were lying around to pin him up against a fence and just kick him the rest of the way to death 24 HP at a time.

More on the random observations front:

* A lucky placement plus a card that generates a bunch of armor passively every turn meant I completed the last Old Gods mini-quest four levels before I was 'supposed' to, and I'm kind of surprised how much I'd managed to find exploring prior to being able to unlock the last bits of the map. I've, uh, I've collected everything now.

* Caretaker. I am so goddamn irritated with Caretaker, I can't, I can't even, I just, arrgh.

* Re: the above, there's a point where (minimal spoilage) you're given the perfect opportunity to bring the team together AND shove her face in how much of a jackass she's being and the game won't let you do it. Arrgh!

* Aww, it's a kitty! You can pet the kitty! ... why does Hunter call her a cute little shapeshifter? O_o

* Crossbones really has become the joke villain at this point. Last time he showed up, I took him out by bouncing his own minions off his face. (And the gas tank next to him, admittedly).

* Too many 'support' cards on the heroes you bring to the party sometimes equates to a whole lot of no-fun when nobody has any attack abilities and redraw hates you. Doh.

* I'm really liking how Tony's turning out. Jackass? Yes. But likeable jackass, especially when he starts realizing how much of a jackass he's being.

* Book Club, Shop Class, EMO KIDS, Caretaker wants to chat, oh, hi Carol, no, I'm booked -- sure, okay, I can help with... I need a scheduling assistant.

But not me! Webhead's still sleeping off the bruises from Eddie in my save.

OK, I am ahead of you, although not too terribly far. I've only done like four story missions so far. I keep getting distracted by the rewards for the general missions. "Oh, that one rewards money, I could build the thing tomorrow. Ooh, artifact, papa needs another research tier." And, so, on, as Carl Sagan might have said. :)

This is -exactly- how my first run went. I did so many general missions to upgrade everything that by the time I broke down and did a story mission, I walloped it. Later on, I was to the point that a new hero appeared and I could focus on them because all the original party members were nearly full on Friendship.

Incidentally, after you max out Friendship getting more actually starts giving them some buffs. It's not worth going out of your way to pursue it if you can help someone who's not maxed out instead, but it's a nice touch.

Also at max friendship, be sure to do the challenge map for that character! They're pretty tough puzzles, but you get their legendary card and a sweet costume.

And the winner is: Blade! Whose special Midnight Sun suit is... not really in keeping with his image? But it is cool-looking.

"Great work, everybody! We nailed everything about this mission. Now let's wrap it up and go lose in the cutscene."
—The Hunter to team, at the end of every single story mission

That's getting pretty old.

This. I hate this. Would it be so hard to just show how you went from a righteous pummeling in the mission to getting your shiny metal asses handed to you in the cutscene? Just a few seconds of "oh, no, what now?" would make so much more narrative sense.

I guess 47 hours is a pretty good run before the first crash to desktop, but that was still annoyingly timed. I guess Hunter and Cap's combo card is so powerful even the game can't withstand it.

I need to take Illyana and Robbie on a mission so I can see if you can set up a portal to dump out into one of Robbie's hellpits. If that works it's going to be my new favorite thing.

Hee! My one disappointment is I have yet to be able to drop someone into a pit from above, such as from Magik's Gather or Trap Door.
