is very cute, and a pretty chill palate cleanser from more mechanically demanding or frenetic games.

It's Satisfactory by way of Stardew Valley. Instead of farming, you're mining resources to set up automated supply chains in order to feed components into the gaping maw of the rocket silo your family built. And sure there's villagers to meet too. :)

It's cute, but I gotta admit that the "building in people's houses" and "blocking streets with pipes and conveyor belts" parts sound a little janky.

(building in biters homes does not count i refuse to believe they are native to nauvis anyway)

That's part of the charm. You can see people get annoyed if you block their daily activities, so you're encouraged to use underground transport or cranes if you're going across paths they will traverse.
