Seems still to happen, though those crashes tend to be outliers. Dead aircraft occasionally do hilariously improbable things, reminding me somewhat of the occasionally explosive physics failures in Viscera Cleanup Detail, or the early days after they added ragdoll death animations to City of Heroes.

I had a game earlier today in which my aircraft got all shot to pieces, to the point where I had no say at all in where it went... but where it went was not down, so technically I was still alive and in play when the mission ended, a minute or so later. :)
