I'm just bumping this back to the top of the board on the occasion of General Yeager's death. I remember reading somewhere that someone had brought Strike Witches to his attention on some occasion or another, and that he was... bemused by the concept. I've often wondered whether Shimada et al. were not aware that he, unlike the archetypes for every other character in the franchise, was still alive, or if they just didn't figure he'd ever find out...
