Naval aviator and astronaut Bruce McCandless II has died, aged 80. He's probably best known for having tested the untethered Manned Maneuvering Unit, which he helped develop, on an STS flight in 1984 (pictured below). He was also CAPCOM for Apollo 11 during the first EVA.

In an EPU context, he's one of the namesakes of John Jay McCandless over in UF (the other, of course, being John Jay).
