Sir Ian Holm Cuthbert, probably best known as Bilbo Baggins in the in Peter Jackson's movies passed away Friday from complications relating to Parkinson's. He was also the actor portraying Father Vito in The Fifth Element, Mr. Kurtzman in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Ash in Alien as well as numerous film adaptations of Shakespeare's works, and was nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar for Chariots of Fire.

I'm sad to hear of his passing, he was a good actor.

Coincidentally, I got to play the new tabletop Alien RPG yesterday. I played a synth in honor of him and somehow managed to get my head knocked off and trying to kill a human while my head is almost off. (The human was trying to kill us all, so at least I was heroic)

Not only that, Holm starred in Lord Of The Rings twice. As well as the film trilogy, back in the early 80s he played Frodo in a BBC Radio 26-part dramatisation of (almost) the entire trilogy — as usual, the section with Bombadil was left out. I really enjoyed this version; it had many songs from the books, and the music was memorable. The title theme in particular is an immortal earworm I can still remember clearly to this day.

And would you believe, I found it. The first seven doubled-up episodes, anyway.

Hold on, here's another one with better sound. The same channel also has the music of the series.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.
