My heart goes out to him and his family. There's not much else I can do, sadly, but my thoughts are most definitely with him.

Fuck 2020, fuck careless drivers, and especially fuck people who run off without rendering aid. I'm sure your appointment and your insurance premium were worth more than the health and possibly life of that man on the bike you just hit, right?

Also, I feel like I don't remember very well the stuff he wrote, and I definitely need to fix that.

Having read through that, there's been a couple of updates. He's still not responsive, but the brain bleed has gone down. They're going to try and see if he can breathe on his own without the respirator.

Fuck. And I just went back over the first UF story I ever read way back in the far off year of 1994 again last night, "Visit to an Empty Planet", and now I hear about this.

Can somebody please restore reality from a previous backup? Say, 1998 or so? I've had enough of this shit now.

From Judy Meadows, Chris’s mother, writing this afternoon: “We just got this news update from Alex. This sounds encouraging. We were about to lose hope, but maybe God will work a miracle after all. Of course, Chris is still in serious condition, so we must not get our hopes too high. We’ll just keep praying.”

From Alex Meadows, one of Chris’s brothers: “I am visiting Chris right now. He looks much better today on the outside. The hematoma swelling is significantly reduced from when I saw him Thursday. They have switched his ventilator to APAP only, as he is breathing on his own. They are currently doing a 24-hr EEG because of some minor seizure activity which neurology will review tomorrow. Apnea study will probably happen on Monday. He is on some medicine to control seizures and to reduce high blood pressure and to control his temperature. ~Alex”

OH that's good news.

From Alex, writing this afternoon: “Just visited Chris. He had a bit of a spa day this morning — the nurses trimmed his mustache for him. He is doing a better job with his blood pressure today, managing to maintain it below 160 without medication. His body temperature is also much more stable. He has a cooling blanket still, but it is at a very low setting.”

Chris went into cardiac arrest this morning and did not recover.

At least no one was forced to make the call to 'pull the plug'.

May his Deity of choice welcome him home.

Ah, hell. Chris was good people. I mostly interacted with him on the alt.pub.dragons-inn newsgroup back in USENET days. The man could write.
