Astronaut Michael Collins, best known as the Command Module Pilot of Apollo 11, has died. Here is a post from a couple of years ago in which I posted an excerpt from his autobiography, Carrying the Fire, to illustrate why it is my favorite astronaut memoir.A lot of the Apollo astronauts are/were generally around my grandfather's age (Collins was six months younger). Possibly for that reason, it particularly haunts me to see them going. --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-21 AT 02:50 AM (EDT) Got a little weepy at work today when I found out. "If you had any balls, you'd say 'Oh my God, what is that thing?' then scream and cut your mic." - Cary Elwes as Collins offers a suggestion for Armstrong's first words, From the Earth to the Moon "Mare Tranquillitatis" (a dramatization, but from the linked excerpt, I can believe it)
