A veteran war correspondent who reported on the Vietnam conflict, remaining there until 1975, and then remembered for reporting on the first Iraqi war from his hotel room in Baghdad by cell phone.

He was sometimes a bit controversial (his interviews with Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden for CNN, and his firing in 2003 for criticizing US strategy on Iraqi TV, for example), but he saw the two major conflicts of the later 20th century and reported on them for the people watching on television.

I'll always remember him for having reported the words of the unnamed US Army Major who, explaining how our grunts had recently liberated the mortal shit out of a ville called Ben Tre, said simply, "It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it."
