Yes, he actually died early last year, but I somehow hadn't heard about it until now. That's just how not dialed into the outside world I've been for the last little while.

David Johansen was a musician and actor who first became famous as the lead singer of the early-'70s proto-punk band the New York Dolls. To people my age, he's probably best known as the novelty artist Buster Poindexter, who appeared on Saturday Night Live a bunch of times in the '80s and, like many novelty acts, recorded a song that went mega-huge and which he hated for the rest of his life ("Hot Hot Hot", which is actually a cover, believe it or not). He also played the Ghost of Christmas Past opposite Bill Murray in Scrooged.
