Mori Calliope has just released an oddly chill cover of Otonoke (the OP for the explosively popular supernatural anime Dan da Dan).

HoloEN's first original all-hands* song, "Odyssey", came out today. (The previous everyone-active-at-the-time song, "Mind Craft", is a cover. And predates Justice.)

It's very much in the vein of the earlier ensemble songs Calli wrote the lyrics for, particularly "Journey Like a Thousand Years"--the title's kind of a giveaway there. The lyrics are also tailored to whoever is singing any given line, which must have taken forever. I have a feeling this one is going to become deeply melancholy as time goes on. It's pretty melancholy now, or maybe that's just me. I'm in a pretty fragile mood tonight.

Moona Hoshinova's Taut Hati is super cute.

Edit, because no-one else has added anything:
Dooby has just (less than 12 hours ago) released a cover/rewrite of Anamanaguchi's "Miku". She describes it as a "Ratsune Miku" cover, which is both funny and maybe a hint that she plans on doing it again.

Editing in multiple, this time:
Nimi Nightmare has her own take on "Miku", explicitly titled "I'm Thinking Nimi".
Hoshimachi Suisei's "Orbital Period" is beautiful, as to be expected from anything that she puts her name on.
New Gamers song! Shirakami Fubuki takes the lead in "Wonder Future!".
Suisei's "Venus Bug" is definitely a bop, but the MV has a strange sort of creeping surreality.
Suisei's "Pathfinder", now a couple years old, doesn't have an official MV at all, but here is a fan-made animatic for an excerpt.

On the VShojo side...

Michi Mochivee's cover of Daughter's "Medicine". Some really lovely touches in there. Also to remember is that this is someone who sent IronMouse into a full "Feisty Latina" screaming fit saying she 'couldn't sing'.

Speaking of the Mouse, she won Best VTuber at the Streamer Awards, and performed at the awards. She started to perform her Halloween song "Time To Feast" before her butler, Bubi, showed up to do a world premiere of a new song Cry For Me. (watch the background carefully for Special Guests).

I may have posted this before, but there's also the Vshojo Disney Villain Mashup. It misses Everyone's Favorite Teakettle, but that's because Henya was on hiatus recovering from simultaneous COVID-19 and pneumonia. (It had some controversy with two songs: one because many people don't think Bruno is a villain, and the other because they forgot that Fox made Anastasia and the Mouse ate the Fox.)

and to finish this off how about three indies working together as one giant thirst trap? Akuma Nihmune, Bao the Whale and Cinder doing "She-Wolf" by Shakira. (wow, that one aged like milk)

...and Zentreya and Froggyloch performing Steelers Wheel's classic "Stuck In The Middle With You".

(The joke is that Froggy once went to a convention in Texas and thought she met Zentreya and saw her be cool in a Whataburger, thus the entire Whataburger theming of the video.)

I haven't actually seen Encanto, so I can't comment on whether or not Bruno is a villain, but "We Don't Talk About Bruno" doesn't match the normal formula for a Villain Song, and I can definitely imagine people getting uptight about that.

Bruno is... more a victim of his power and how people perceive him than the villain he's perceived as.

His power is precognition. He tells people bad things he foresees happening so things go better for them, and then they ignore him. When the bad things happen, they blame him for it, and with the joys of selective memory, remember him delivering these warnings as him being gleeful about it. He's a decent person, just victimized by perception.

That's why they don't talk about Bruno. It really IS a villain song, but the villain is the act of the family treating him badly instead of an evil person like Ursula, or Jafar, or Dr. Facilier.

That was more or less the argument I made to my sister, that in the context of Encanto's plot, Bruno serves as the antagonist or at least a malevolent force when the song plays. Amusingly, you could make the exact opposite argument for "Gaston," that when it plays in the film he's not truly villainous but simply an arrogant prick. And "Remember Me" is a villain's song in Coco when sung by Ernesto, but then you learn that it was written as a lullaby by Hector.

There's definitely a vibe of "no regrets", but on the other hand I can definitely imagine management looking at the lyrics and telling Gura that she couldn't release the song until she had announced her graduation, because otherwise people would treat the song as a graduation announcement. "No more hands upon my words, they only speak for me."

Also, I can't help but read that whale skeleton as a reference to the MV for "mumei.", though I didn't read very deeply into it.

> "No more hands upon my words, they only speak for me."

FWIW, from what I've seen people are reading into that instead as her expressing frustration with the people mixing her vocals and editing her song releases. One of her last originals (that she sung in concert first) is never going to be released.

As performed at her 3D anniversary concert.

And before it, we had this heartbreaking cover of Medicine by Daughter (wait for the moments at 2:25 and 3:19.)

This is a girl who said she couldn't sing and got IronMouse to come and yell at her.
