... they rarely disappoint like more succinct ones sometimes can. For example, I'm sure I've said before that I will always be sad Attack on Titan isn't a space opera about a war between the various colonies of the solar system's outer moons. If it had been called That Time I Joined an Anti-Giant Defense Force and Then Discovered That I'm Actually a Giant Myself, I wouldn't have gotten my hopes. And don't even get me started about Yuri on Ice... --G. -><- Benjamin D. Yuri on Ice has a guy named Yuri who spends a lot of his time on ice (being, y'know, a professional ice skater). I don't see the problem. ;-)

This latest entry in Bacon Media's "So You've Just . . . " series is a bit odd, and even more specific than usual"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

LAST EDITED ON Nov-23-25 AT 01:21 PM (EST) Earlier this week, I found out that in the American take on the Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 movie that was scripted in the 80s but never produced, Zeon was an army of alien artificial intelligences rather than humans. It was mostly populated by 'Zaks' and the 'Ziong' was the leader. Oh, and every robot was about 100 metres tall.I joked that it was actually SD Gundam Force the movie, ahead of its time. https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/General_Zeong

I can think of at least one, but that title would actually be a spoiler for it... -IA. (specifically that the robot builder is the lead's dad only comes out fairly far in)

Probably half of the super robot shows of the 70's. Being a Super Robot show back then practically required the Super Robot to be made by the main characters father or grandfather.

Okay, I was a little too vague. In the one I'm thinking of, he knows the robot was made (or found and upgraded, I'm not 100% on this anymore) by his grandfather, except it turns out later on that it was actually his father who made (or whatever) the robot.-IA. (fgvyy gur fnzr thl zvaq lbh)

No, I mean the title describes probably half the super robot shows of the 70s. And many shows since that, too, including some Real Robot shows. If we loosen the definition of aliens a bit, we start with Mazinger Z, and move on to Great Mazinger and Mazinkaiser, then we continue on to Steel Jeeg, with the twist that he *is* the giant robot (well, it's head anyway), Diappolon, Combattler V, though it's the Team Girl who's grandfather built the mech, Groizer X, Gakeen, Mechander Robo, Voltes V, Zambot 3, Daitarn 3, and that's just the 70s!

UF Utena needs to finally get a giant robot of her own. She did pretty well with the Getter Machine in Hunter Rose, even though she went in with next to no training in one of the most important missions of her career....or is that because she went in with next to no training in one of the most important missions of her career? It's kinda hard to tell sometimes.

Getters are of that specific class of machines you can control entirely via vibes so that's probably exactly so. I bet if she had an hour of training she'd have failed spectacularly because she kept trying to pilot it instead of just letting instinct and gut feelings work. Getters, Evangelions, Brains (Brain Powerd), most stuff from Gurren Lagann, Lantern rings...Empathic weapons like that practically work themselves if you have a clear enough image of what you want to do.
