So, we have more Samurai Troopers this season, a sequel to the 1988 Yoroiden Samurai Torūpā (aka Ronin Warriors). Two episodes in so far, I believe episode 3 is out later today.

The set-up confirms that this is a sequel, that the events of Yoroiden happened, and that as result there is now a government agency, the DST, who trains and supports the five armored troopers in case there is another demon invasion. And, btw, please vote for the political party supporting this!

Then there is another demonic invasion. It immediately becomes evident that the current five armored troopers are not ready for this. They only have their base gear and weapons, and when the 'leader' demands to be shown how to get the full armor he's told 'you're not ready for that'. Only one of the troopers, the youngest, seems to even have his heart in the right place and while he tries, he needs to be bailed out by their instructor, who seems to have been from the immediately previous squad (not the original team, just the 'a few years ago's team) who can't make full use of the armor because he's too old (late teens, maybe 20ish).

By the end of the first episode, it's pretty clear that 1. they need to build a new team of armored troopers. And 2. There is politics going on among the ten enemy equivalents. (Ten. I suspect we shouldn't get too attached, since that number is likely to drop fast).

I like this. It takes the original show and filters in more current tropes, without, at least so far, losing the core of the story. It's got some gore, it is a mess, but at core it appears to show that in a crisis, that heroes can rise up to save the day, sometimes from the most unlikely places.

From what I can see, it's 12 episodes with a part 2 somewhere in the works, so while I doubt we're getting a 39 episode run like the original, we should hopefully have at least 20 episodes, and I'm there for it.

I was reticent at first, given that it had all the hallmarks of one of those "bishonen team" anime that were all the rage a few years ago, but it's made some interesting choices, and the MC is less generic shonen and more "could be voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama".

That being said, I found the last episode a bit rushed, possibly because they only have one cour to work with, and I'm pretty sure there's another twist or two coming.

I think you'll find that the original show was like this, too. :)

Different kind of bishy. I'm talking "The cast are played by members of a Jpop band" style. :)

I think there's going to be a second cour.

Huh. Even weirder choice, then.
