I must have dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
Hear them moving into the street
Now did you read the news today?
They say the danger's gone away
But I can see the fires still alight
And they're burning into the night

There's too many men
There's too many people
Making too many problems
And there's not much love to go round
Just tell me why this is a land of confusion

Now this is the world we live in
(Oh oh, oh)
These are the hands we're given
(Oh oh, oh)
Use them and let's start trying
(Oh oh, oh)
To make this a place worth living in
Oh yeah

Ah Superman where are you now?
Seems everything's gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Well they're losing control by the hour

This is the time
This is the place
Where we look for the future
And there's not much love to go round
Just tell me why this is a land of confusion

Well this is the world we live in
(Oh oh, oh)
These are the hands we're given
(Oh oh, oh)
Use them and let's start trying
(Oh oh, oh)
To make this a place worth living on
Oh yeah

Well I remember long ago
Yes when the sun was shining
Oh and the stars were bright
Ooh all through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago...

Oh -
Oh -
Oh -
Oh -

I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We're not just making promises
That we know we'll never keep

There's too many men
There's too many people
Making too many problems
And there's not much love to go round
Just tell me why this is a land of confusion

Now this is the world we live in
(Oh oh, oh)
These are the hands we're given
(Oh oh, oh)
Use them and let's start trying
(Oh oh, oh)
To make this a place worth living in
Yes this is the world we live in
(Oh oh, oh)
These are the names that we're given
(Oh oh, oh)
Stand up and let's start showing
(Oh oh, oh)
Ooh just where our lives are going to
Oh yeah

I will forever be unable to hear this song without thinking of the Spitting Image puppet video.

Me too. I suspect it's true of all of us who were around when the song was being played on MTV (and, um, when MTV still played videos snarl).

But of course :) And then there was the time Ronnie got the phone and the hotline mixed up and ordered pepperoni pizza from Moscow...

I have looked into the abyss, and the abyss looked also back into me.
Neither of us liked what we saw.

well, that's kind of unfortunate. I never saw that video, but I remember thinking those puppets were hideous and not at all funny back in the day, so it kind of bums me out that what I always think of as the NXE OP is tied in with images of the puppets in so many readers' heads. I probably wouldn't have used it if I had known, but the lyrics are so perfect, and it's got that awesome drum part...

If it makes you feel any better, I don't visualize it that way, I just think of it. Besides, it actually adds a bit of appropriate flavor in that at various times many of the characters in NXE are effectively puppets, as are (most of the time) the EVAs...

And I agree, the lyrics are perfect.

No problems on my part. I've never seen the video in question, nor heard of the puppets prior to today, so I have no problem linking this song with NXE, and having just finished the TMP this morning, it feels like a perfect match.
