'Better to reign in Hell than Serve in Heaven' is, if I remember correctly, a line from Milton's Paradise Lost. Specifically a rationalization made by Lucifer after he got kicked out of his office upstairs.

I think it's a pretty good bet which way Durandal went.

Somehow I think that the lives of the Princes just got a lot more complicated.
