[1] This song was an obvious choice as far as I was concerned, but it did have the unfortunate side effect of reminding a lot of people of the original video, which doesn't fit the image I was trying to convey at all. Having never seen the original video, I did not know that at the time. (Sue me, my town's cable system didn't carry MTV when I was growing up.)

[65] The city in question is Kettering (2001 census population 51,063), third-largest (at the time) in Northamptonshire. The nearest village to Crofthenge is actually Hanging Houghton.

[116] I hadn't read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas at the time, but this bit bears an odd resemblance to the "Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop" passage.

[138] A lot of readers - hell, most readers, if the mail we got was any indication - automatically assumed right from this first scene that DJ was just an ass. And while he does take a very arrogant attitude toward a lot of things in the early going, what people don't see until later in the season, and much more so in the second season, is that a lot of that is a cover, his way of handling a situation in which he doesn't feel nearly as confident as he seems. The trick is, he acts more or less the same when he's in a situation he does believe he can handle. It's a very well-developed defense mechanism.

[230] Ken Stanfield is, in fact, Tommy Lee Jones's "K" character from Men in Black, though there's no indication that that's the character's former name in the actual movie - it was made up locally.

[268] Majestic 12 is the code name, much-beloved of UFOlogists and other conspiracy theorists, of the secret committee formed by President Truman in response to the UFO incidents of 1947. In NXE it was a forerunner to X-COM.

[412] As we will learn much later, Gendou means his son Shinji.

[473] This is more than just the momentary fancy of a young man with a romantic temperament: It's the beginning of Rei's celestial attunement to DJ, though neither character understands enough to recognize it at the time.

[541] No corporeal being can touch the blood of an angel with impunity.

[619] Shepard's Prayer.

[706] And, more to the point, somewhere in what remains of his consciousness at this stage, Lucifer now knows who DJ is...

[846] I didn't want to waste any time establishing that this version of Gendou was an absolute bastard.

[848] I wanted an ending song that was more upbeat than "Fly Me to the Moon", but still mentioned the moon. The fact that a more melancholy cover of the same tune was available for a later season was a bonus as well.

Sweet deal.

I was thinking about re-reading NXE the other day, thanks for putting this out.

Is this numbering sequence right? Or did your fingers slip on the keyboard?

Given that line 16 is blank, logic suggests a typo.

So it is. And does. I've been doing more and more of those lately, as my left hand doesn't want to do what I want it to, so I know about typos.

Oo, bummer. I spent most of the summer that way. So very frustrating.

Oh, you said it. Most of the hand either tingles or is entirely numb. Which means typos, among other things. Ah well.

In other news, the Annotations are very interesting. I'll have to type them out and read them along with the stories. :)

Ah. Mine felt normal, but did not obey instructions. (The most frustrating part about that? Having to explain to the nurses and covering neurologists in the hospital, at least three times a day, that no, in fact, there was no numbness, no tingling, no weakness, and no pain - it just didn't work.)

Some people just will not listen, will they? *shakes head* Well, mine is numb, or tingles(or at times both at various points of the hand...THAT is an interesting sensation, I'll have to say) and won't really obey orders. And even when it does, at rare times, do things, they tend to be the WRONG things, what with not being really able to tell if it's in the right place. I used to be able to touch type. Now? Not so's you'd notice, since the fingers end up where they're not meant to be, if they do anything.

I have mad plans to convert the stories to fully-formatted PDF, so these will now become footnotes in the Annotated Editions. :)

Annotations for NXE! The thing that essentially dragged me back kicking and screaming into EPU fandom a couple years back!

Upon noting their existence, I squealed with glee like a fangirl. Thank you!

I would just like to state for the record that this was my first encounter with EPU fanfiction, and I remember reading it on Fanfic.net...
And promptly quiting halfway through the first chapter, thinking it was just another Self-Insert Dramafest
Boy was I wrong

Also, you made me a Genesis Fan with that one song, you bastard

... where, just for the record, I have no idea whatsoever why it was to be found. Certainly not through any action of mine.

Might I, without wanting to be rude, enquire why on earth you were on ff.net, if you have problems with dramafests?

Please, no bashing ff.net here.

(They do it just fine themselves.)

I don't know how I missed these! Well, actually, I do; I was so focused on "Upward Mobility" that I wasn't really paying attention to what else might be new.

Anyway, I'm glad to see you did manage to get these annotations together - I remember you warned that you might run into difficulties assembling the needed information due to the lengthy time lapse. Many thanks!
