I sort of supposed that the new pistols were in that frame of "Now that we're no longer fighting for our lives, we can spend some time focusing on ergonomics and looks" that sort of happens between wars. Like how XCOM's endgame weapons look, when you're usually not under a time crunch and scrounging for resources.
