#0, Older firefox connection issue
Posted by Meridias on Sep-09-26 at 00:42 AM
For the last few days on my older computer, firefox had an issue connecting with the site. Tried clearing cookies and all that which didn't work. After so google-fu, what ended up working was:
Go into settings - privacy and security
scroll down to 'Connection and software security' and hit 'advanced settings'
under 'HTTPS-Only Mode', hit 'manage exceptions'
under address, put www.eyrie-productions.com, click 'turn off' and hit 'save changes' and it *should* work again after a refresh.

Apparently, firefox has tightened up their 'make everything https' which wasn't playing well with this site's older software. Just in case anybody else has this issue pop up.

Thanks for flagging this! I hadn't been having a problem clicking through the "hey this isn't encrypted" screen, but it's nice that they now support persistent exceptions to https-only mode, even if you have to dig into the settings to use it.

I ran across this the other day as well, but the above fix didn't work for me. :/ So I'm reluctantly using Chrome for this one tab, for the moment.

I've pinged Dave about it, but it sounds like there's not much to be done on the server side apart from possibly implementing SSL. Which I've asked about. It may be time.

Which version are you on? I exclusively use the ESR version of Firefox
( https://www.firefox.com/en-US/browsers/enterprise/#download ); despite
the "enterprise" branding, this is the version that, IMNSHO, everyone
who isn't doing the bleedingest of bleeding edge web app development ought to
be using. The advantage is simple: questionably useful new features only
show up once a year, not once every six weeks.

SSL is a heck of a lot easier to turn on nowadays than it was ten or even
five years ago. If there is some awkward obstacle I would be willing to
poke at it, this is not that far off from what I was doing all the time
two jobs ago.

Although, now that I had the same issue pop back up even after adding the previously mentioned 'fix', I think part of what firefox is complaining about is that eyrie-productions.com is a redirect to eyrie.net if I remember right.

No, not a redirect. Both names resolve independently to the same IP address.

Ah. I stand corrected.

Just remarking, same issue. Updated Firefox today, tried the OP fix to no avail. I'm on mobile for now I guess, which really sucks.

Secondary fix:
instead of 'Connection and software security', back up a bit to 'DNS over HTTPS', hit advanced settings
add www.eyrie-productions.com as an exception

That didn't work for me either, but unfortunately, it looks like the point is moot. Dave got back to me and said he could take a look at it, but while he's been meaning to migrate the server to a new system for a while now, he's since reached the conclusion that he doesn't have the time to admin a server any more. His career has moved along and he doesn't do it for his day job any more, so it's just been a free side gig of his for some time. I don't grudge him the decision that it's time to hang it up, but it means in a month or two, when he gets around to wrapping it up, our long-time hosting situation will be no more.

He's offered some tips on migration and the like, which I will gratefully accept, since I have no idea where to even start. I'm certainly no longer qualified to run it myself.

I'm not sure how to parse this development, though I've known it would come eventually for years. For now I think I'll go to bed.

I can't offer a new long-term home, at least not without a much longer
conversation first, but I have an underutilized web server VPS that, if
need be, you could use as a temporary read-only backup host. Just so the
stories stay readable, at least, until a better option is found.

The fact that DCBoard believes that all links are http-without-an-s will probably make it somewhat more of a headache, but putting something on port 80 that just redirects everything to the equivalent 443 URL will probably make that work out okay.

I had this issue as well, and I'm a little embarrassed I didn't think to mention it here after resolving it for myself. (Might have saved at least some of you some trouble.)

I'm currently on Firefox 155.0.1 (64 bit), on a desktop PC, and what worked for me was to go into Settings > Privacy and Security, scroll down to "DNS Over HTTPS" (NOT "Connection and software security") and open the Advanced Settings for that. Then, either turn that feature off completely or (what I did) simply add exceptions for www.eyrie-productions.com and www.eyrie.net.

EDIT: d'oh, now I see that Meridias already posted this as a "secondary fix". at least I can confirm it worked for me.

Thank you very much! The DNS over HTTPS setting fixed it for me as well.

So the board started responding again for me today and I came over to this forum to see if it was a Me thing or a Everyone thing. I was experiencing this exact issue as described.

But I haven't changed anything in Firefox or elsewhere, didn't even realize it could be solved client-side (I thought it was a server hiccup). So, uh... congrats on the fix, I think?

(Hope?)
