#0, Temporary mirror of eyrie-productions.com is now up

With Gryphon's permission, I have mirrored the EPU website temporarily onto a new host. As long as the existing host remains available, the mirror will be at <https://eyrie-mirror.owlfolio.org/>; it can be reassigned as www.eyrie-productions.com very fast if need be. The Forum is not yet included; I have to write a custom script for that, a naive mirror attempt downloaded 8GB of copies of the login form (no foolin'!) and didn't look like it was going to stop before it ran my server out of disk space.

I don't need any help with the Forum mirror, but I would appreciate it if yinz would kick the mirror's tires a bit. Look for missing files. Look for places where the layout is broken or the text is unreadable. It's probably best to report problems by replying to this post, that way everyone can see what's already a known issue; however, in case the Forum stops being usable, I can also be reached as <zack@owlfolio.org> or on the fediverse at <https://hackers.town/@zwol>.

One extra special thing to watch out for: If you try to load a page and you get a screenful of vaguely Victorian-sounding nonsense text with a green stripe at the bottom that says "A book of sand", you've been misidentified as a scraper bot. If this happens, please pay a visit to <https://httpbin.org/headers> in a new tab, hit the "copy" button in the upper left hand corner, and then paste that into a [code] block in a follow-up. We apologize for the inconvenience.

p.s. there is a plan to make it feasible for more people to help with modernizing the back end (which in turn should help with finding a permanent new home); expect another announcement about that in a week or so.

Thanks for this! I've got my fingers crossed that we won't need it, but it's good to know that there won't just be a yawning silence until I figure shit out if the current server drops sooner than expected.

It's probably best to just let that sit until you/others are ready to work with the backend files--everything should be in there, and since DCF is just a bunch of scripts that parse flat text files in the first place, it'll probably be better to work with than anything that might be pulled off the front end, so to speak.

Speaking of which, it just occurred to me that there's a bunch of "lost" Forum content that we might be able to regain that way. The DCF database got corrupted at one point (old-timers may remember the time a bunch of long threads got all weird), and a lot of the older posts in the UF General board got orphaned. Their files are still there, but they don't appear if you start paging back in the archive and they don't come up in search results. It would be interesting to see if they could be resurrected somehow by someone a lot better at messing around with ancient scripts than I am...
